The land in north-east Groningen was once part of the sea. In centuries past, farmers reclaimed it; thanks to the marine clay, it became virtually the most fertile land in the Netherlands. Potatoes, cereals and sugar beet thrived in the soil; the harvests were bountiful, and the farmers became fabulously wealthy. They were keen to display this wealth through the imposing farmhouses they built. Like cathedrals, these still stand in the landscape, just like the medieval churches and noble borgen. Together, they form the region’s magnificent cultural heritage. Behind the dyke lies the UNESCO World Heritage Site of the Wadden Sea. It is magical to see how the tides ebb and flow here; the water comes and goes every six hours.

How to get there
The cycle route starts and ends at the Menkemaborg in Uithuizen. The borg is about a 10-minute walk from Uithuizen train station, making it easily accessible. On weekdays and Saturdays, a train arrives every half hour from both the city of Groningen and Roodeschool. For the current times, please check 9292.nl.
