Wealth as far as the eye can see

3 hours (45 km)

See, taste and marvel around Uithuizen. Cycle past imposing farms, medieval churches and noble borgen, while enjoying vast fields, local delicacies and Unesco World Heritage Sites.

Once upon a time, the soil of north-eastern Groningen was sea. Farmers turned it into land in earlier centuries; thanks to the sea clay, it became just about the most fertile land in the Netherlands. Potatoes, cereals and sugar beets sprouted from the ground, the harvests were plentiful and the farmers became very rich. They liked to show off this wealth with the imposing farms they built. Like cathedrals, they still stand in the landscape, as do medieval churches and nobleman's borgen. Together, they form the region's magnificent cultural heritage. Behind the dike lies Unesco World Heritage Site Wadden Sea. It is magical how ebb and flood alternate here; every six hours the water comes and goes.

On this route, experience the generosity of Waddenland. From the high wooden bridges over the watercourses, the fields are easy to see. What grows on the land is sold along the road or in farm shops. Stap on your bike and get to know the richness of this area: unique heritage, wide views and idiosyncratic farmers who produce honest and delicious food with heart and soul. Look, taste and marvel.
