1 hour 30 minutes (5 km)

She is the heroine of the Veenkoloniën: Aletta Jacobs. This inspiring walking route leads you through the village where it all began in 1854: Sappemeer. You can start your walk at the Historic Shipyard or from station Hoogezand-Sappemeer. This is also where the life-size cartoon about her life hangs.

Born and raised in Sappemeer, Aletta Jacobs became famous for being the first Dutch woman to study at university. She then became the first female doctor in the Netherlands and fought tirelessly for women's health and rights. Her fight for women's suffrage took her all over the world. But her cradle was here, in the province of Groningen. This route leads from her birthplace to the place where she grew up and went to school. See also this online map. Along the way, you walk past some fine examples of architecture, such as the Koepelkerk and the former Rijks HBS where Aletta and her siblings went to school. Comic artist Barbara Stok has turned the life story of Aletta Jacobs into a beautiful comic strip that you will find life-sized on the station.
