Groningen city centre is full of cafés and restaurants. Super fun! But let's not forget the suburbs. Many a local is right at home at these catering establishments and each entrepreneur has his own special story. These are a few restaurants and cafés from Groningen's various neighbourhoods.

Bisque

Helpman - Bisque is the new home of Niels Schievink & Sabrina Mans. Having both worked in various (star) restaurants, they have settled down in Groningen for a new challenge. And so is the changing menu: challenging. With daily fresh products, surprising flavour combinations are created. They also have over 20 open wines. This means tasty dishes and well-paired glasses of wine, count your profits.

Kroeg van Klaas

Oosterpoortbuurt - Hanging at the bar with a freshly tapped beer, a group of people behind you playing billiards and the barman having a chat with a regular - just a few hundred metres from the city centre, you still get a village feel at Kroeg van Klaas. Not surprisingly, this brown pub has been a household name in the Oosterpoort neighbourhood for almost 50 years. Kroeg van Klaas has a changing agenda filled with African jam sessions on Sunday afternoons, a monthly poetry club in the back room and activities such as pub quizzes, dance evenings and listening concerts.

Lambik

Oranjebuurt - On the edge of the Noorderplantsoen is a cosy eatery, Lambik. A dark brown café that sat here more than 25 years ago was transformed into this colourful place. Guests of all ages stop by for a fresh bite of the day after an afternoon relaxing in the park. Eternal doubters beware: there is no need to think long and hard about what to order here! The menu changes every day and there is a choice of two dishes: vegetarian or meat. So you can be sure that the produce on your plate is fresh. And when the furniture is moved outside on warm summer evenings, it's just like sitting on a terrace in France.

The Tattletale

Rivierenbuurt - Just behind the main train station you will find a cosy café where young and old come together. A neighbourhood café, just as a neighbourhood café should be. This is where all the facets of a relaxed evening come together: gambling at the slot machine, throwing darts at the dartboard and drinking a delicious, cool special beer from the tap. With 40 special beers (and counting), you can come here for your Vrijmibo, birthday or any other good reason for a drink. Not surprisingly, this former liquor store has been the place to enjoy a good drink for 90 years.

Het Oude Politiebureau

Oosterpark district - Stadsrestaurant Het Oude Politiebureau is a cosy restaurant in a unique building with dishes from all corners of the world. Sustainability, local and social are central here. In the playful interior, you will find several elements of the Oosterpark neighbourhood. The dishes are prepared with local ingredients as much as possible. And it is also a non-profit work-learning company, where catering enthusiasts can gain work experience. Also likeable: at the het Oude Politiebureau, they think everyone should be able to eat out, so they keep prices low.

The Lover

Hortusbuurt - The Kleine Rozenstraat has been home to a café for more than 100 years. For the last 23 years, it has been the address of The Lover. This cosy neighbourhood café has many people's hearts because of its well-stocked games cupboard, friendly staff and lovely terrace. Sitting under the trees in perhaps one of Groningen's loveliest streets, you can enjoy an excellent bite to eat and a drink here just a 5-minute walk from the city centre.
