Every year, thousands of students are eager to start their student time in Groningen. The time that, according to many pastors, is going to be the best time of your life. And although the start of this academic year is somewhat different from other years, it is still important for students to get acquainted with their new place of residence. We like to help brand-new students along the way and introduce here the places where you are bound to spend a lot of time as a student. Finally, don't forget to also play our 360-degree game, so you can finally call yourself a real 'virtual Groninger'. Good luck in your new city!
To the Ap
Korenbeurs & Vismarkt - When a supermarket has no shopping trolleys but only baskets at the entrance and the range of ready-made meals exceeds that of household items, you know you're in a student town. Albert Heijn Korenbeurs is fully equipped to meet the wants and needs of the modern student. Located on the Vismarkt, in a beautiful listed building, this centrally located Albert Heijn branch is an eye-catcher not to be missed. Run out of 'stufi'? On market days (Tues, Fri and Sat) you can shop for cheap groceries for the whole week on the Vismarkt- especially after four o'clock.

Making careful passes on the dance floor
Poelestraat & Peperstraat - Nowhere in the city are the paving stones as sticky as in Poele and Peperstraat. Especially when the end of exam week turns into party week. The heart of Groningen's nightlife has countless student pubs including 't Golden Fust, Het Feest, Shooters and De Negende Cirkel. Are you not such a student night owl? In the summer months, Poelestraat is also full of outdoor cafés. And they are also incredibly cosy if you are not a student (anymore).

Where studying and researching Groningen comes together
Zernike Campus - Not necessarily a party place, but definitely a place where many students come every day, is the Zernike Campus. Besides the University of Groningen and Hanzehogeschool, other companies and institutions with a passion for research, education and entrepreneurship work here. Interesting developments are taking place in the fields of Healthy Ageing, Sustainable Society and Energy. You will find the campus at about 10 minutes cycling north from the city. Everything is there for a full-day study programme: from supermarket to complete sports complex and various lunch and coffee shops.

The Costa del Grun
Hoornsemeer & Paterswoldsemeer - When the mercury rises above 20 degrees, the Hoornsemeer is a popular spot among students. Bring your swimwear, a towel and a few beers or a bottle of rosé and experience the 'Costa del Grun'. At the lake you will also find several catering establishments that perfectly suit the on-holiday-in-home-town feeling. Have an extensive dinner at Loetje, settle down on the lounge sofas at Kaap Hoorn or choose one of the many other sun-drenched terraces at the lake. In Groningen's words: could be less!

Cracking brain
Broerstraat - You would almost forget it because of all the distractions, but first and foremost, students come to Groningen to study. Broerstraat, with the University Library (UB) and the Academiegebouw, is the centre of academic Groningen. Especially during exam periods, people toil hard in and around the UB. Anyone walking by very quietly can hear the brains of over 2,200 students in the UB cracking.

Night snacking
Corner, Hasret, Febo and others - Not only the pubs, but also the snack bars and kebab shops are open until late every day. And that suits many a student all too well, because the doner kebab is not to be missed by hungry night owls. Fancy a less meaty snack? Then stroll on over to the nearest snack bar and try an eierbal. You won't eat this delicious vegetarian ragout ball anywhere else but in Grunn.

The 'senior' square
Uurwerkersplein - Students losing their wild hair are those who prefer Uurwerkersplein to Peperstraat. Once life gets a bit more serious, you often can no longer go out late into the night during the week, but enjoy a well-deserved VrijMiBo on Friday afternoons. Hidden behind the Kromme Elleboog is the Uurwerkerplein. Here you can eat a tasty stone-oven pizza at de Uurwerker, and have a special beer at De Pintelier to kick off your weekend.
