Good to know - Safe winter dipping

Cold water swimming is wonderfully refreshing, but it does require a few important points of attention. With these tips, you can enjoy the cold and the nature around you in a safe and relaxed way.

Start gently
Your body needs time to get used to cold water. Start with short dips lasting from a few seconds to a minute and build up gradually.

Never go alone
Always make sure someone comes with you or stays on the bank to keep an eye on you. Together, you’ll stay alert and can help each other when needed.

Stay close to the shore
Especially in winter, it’s wise to stay in shallow water. Avoid swimming long distances; just dipping your toes in is enough.

Be mindful of your breathing
When you’re in the cold water, take a moment to ‘catch your breath’. Breathe in and out calmly and take the time to relax.

Make sure you wrap up warm straight afterwards
Bring dry, warm clothes with you and put them on straight after your dip. Think of a warm jumper, thick socks, a hat and, if necessary, a large towel or poncho.

Listen to your body
If you experience tingling in your hands, a headache, nausea or feel weak, stop immediately. Your body always sends the right signals.

Be kind to yourself
Feeling a bit down in winter isn’t something to be ashamed of! It’s all about that refreshing feeling, peace of mind and simply being fully in the moment.
