For centuries, the mound village of Rottum was the site of a Benedictine monastery. A little further on the wierde Helwerd, moreover, a great miracle is said to have taken place. Both were long ago, but their traces are still visible. In Helwerd, missionary Liudger met the blind singer Bernlef. After a laying on of hands, the latter was able to see again. Rottum's church was built on the foundations of the monastery church. At the edge of the churchyard is perhaps the smallest house in Groningen; 't Hoeske van Thais Joaptje. Start at the station in Usquert.
