Cycling in the Westerkwartier

On the Parels in het Westerkwartier website, you will find special interactive themed routes through the region. Via the route booklet and the free app, you can easily view all routes. For example, cycle straight through Middag-Humsterland or along the Nienoord estate. A total of five cycling routes have been set out. Four of them range from 50 to 65 kilometres. The fifth route is a lot longer, namely the 120-kilometre Rietdalroute. The ideal way to discover the Westerkwartier by bike.

With these junctions, you can plan your ideal cycling route through the Westerkwartier. It is handy to check in advance which junctions you want to cycle along and make a note of them somewhere. Once you are on your way, follow the green and white signposting between the nodes. At each junction, there is a sign with a map, so you can easily shorten or extend the route. With this challenging 30-kilometre route, you cycle through the unique coulisse landscape of the southern Westerkwartier. The route starts at the car park of Horeca Centrum Heerlijkheid in Marum. Via the Slibsterbos, you go through the Coendersbos, where deciduous and coniferous trees alternate. Part of the route also takes you along surprising country roads and short cuts. For some extra challenge, take the route towards Jan Dijkzand at Jonkersvaart. This technical 5-kilometre loop takes you through Jan Dijk's private sculpture garden and encounters difficult obstacles. There are many splits and dangerous crossings on the route.
