Borg Nienoord

Feast your eyes in de Schelpengrot

After your visit to the borg, don't miss a visit to the adjacent garden pavilion, also known as Shell Cave. The story about this special grotto goes back to the year 1700, when itinerant artists from Italian Venice decorated the inside of this luxurious garden pavilion with a stunning shell mosaic. The result is breathtakingly beautiful. The dome bears the name Shell Grotto, presumably because grotto means 'mosaic chamber' in Italian.

Unique carriage collection

Since 1958, Borg Nienoord has housed the National Carriage Museum. This special museum has one of the largest collections of carriages in Europe. Royal carriages, including the oldest Orange coach, hay carts, mourning coaches; you name it, you will come across it. Unique in the collection are the two surviving drag carriages, which date back to the time when the tax on carriage wheels was so high that people had to drive the carriages without wheels. Instead of wheels, the carriages were fitted with grease-lubricated skids, popularly known as "greaseballs". There are carriages specially set up for young children, where they can experience what it was like to sit in a carriage in the olden days in style, wearing fancy dress outfits from the dressing-up box. Super exciting and fun to capture on a photo for later.

Enjoying in the atmospheric café

In between or after your unforgettable borg adventure, a cup of coffee and a tasty treat are sure to please. For this you can settle down in the atmospheric Garden Room of the borg. For a heartier appetite, you can also enjoy a tasty lunch or dinner here. When the weather is sunny, the spacious terrace offers enchanting views over the vast estate.

And there is more

On the estate right next to the borg, you can take a lovely walk in the beautiful contemporary garden, which has been landscaped in the atmosphere of how it used to be. Behind the borg is a large family park with a spacious playground and a petting zoo where young children can have the time of their lives. Slide down into the water, play, swim and float in the water in Nienoord's subtropical swimming castle. In short, there is no shortage of time at Landgoed Nienoord.
