Middag-Humsterland

This green and pristine area in the Westerkwartier is the oldest cultural landscape in the Netherlands. The sea used to flow here between the islands of Middag and Humsterland. In the Iron Age, people lived here on mounds, called wierden in Groningen. This special history is still visible here. Besides being a great place to cycle, you can also take beautiful walks in this area. Follow a marked route or set off on your own. For instance, you can start in wierdedorp Ezinge or Garnwerd, and explore the area from here.

Doezumerstruun

Discover the past of the Doezumermieden nature reserve with the Doezumerstruun. On this forestry path in the Westerkwartier, it sometimes feels as if you are far from civilisation. You will immediately notice that you are walking through peat landscape as soon as you walk along the formerly dug out peat pits and over the former peat dykes. The starting point of the walking route is Theetuin Blotevoetenhof, where you can eat or drink something tasty, or follow the Blotevoetenpad.

Pearls in the Westerkwartier

On the website of Pearls in the Westerkwartier, you will find special interactive themed routes through the region. Via the route booklet and the free app, you can easily view all the routes. Learn more about wierden, borgen and monks, for example, or walk through quiet and wooded areas. These walking routes vary in length from 7 to a maximum of 16 kilometres. There are also four treasure hunts for children (from 2 to 5 km). Along the way, they can answer all kinds of fun questions and complete assignments.
