Water sports

The waters of Groningen are home to all kinds of adventures. So while you’re here, consider trying a new and active water sport. Strap on those skis and skim over the lakes, catch the wind in your sails or explore the city from the water. Groningen has so many magnificent places to enjoy time on or beside the water.

Skim over the water

If you have always thought about water-skiing or wakeboarding, now is the time. Groningen has plenty of options to show off any skills, such as at the location Wakepark Groningen near Kardinge. Break Out Grunopark is close to the city, located between the trees, and in the Paterswoldsemeer area is WaterSkiClub Paterswoldsemeer. A bit further out in the province, in Veendam, is Watersportcentre Veendam.

Wind in your sails

Sailing is about controlling all the elements, and the large and open lakes in the province ensure you get to enjoy this fun challenge. Groningen features various locations for learning how to sail, such as the sailing schools near Blauwestad and Meerstad, and beside the Zuidlaardermeer. Another option is Teuntje de Slak, located at the Paterswoldsemeer near Groningen city.

Feet on board!

If you prefer a board over a boat, go windsurfing. Unlike general surfing, all you will need is wind, not waves. And wind is something Groningen has plenty of. The province has options for windsurfing at the Lauwer, located in the Nationaal Park Lauwersmeer. Learn the ropes of windsurfing at the Vakantiepark Cnossen, located near the Leekstermeer. Places suitable for sailing are also suitable for windsurfing, so you have plenty of wonderful options.

Stap in een kano

Pick up those paddles and get in your canoe. Groningen is dotted with places to hire a single canoe or double or triple kayak for a wonderful exploratory expedition on the water. The various waterways and lakes take you from the Paterswoldsemeer to the village of Winsum or even as far as the shallows. Bring a picnic basket, take in the Groningen countryside and enjoy peace and quiet.
