Watersports

There’s plenty to do on Groningen’s waterways. Why not choose a sporting activity and try out a new water sport? Strap on your skis and glide across the lakes, catch the wind in your sails or explore the city from the water. In Groningen, there are plenty of lovely spots to get out onto the water.

Glide across the water

Always wanted to water-ski or wakeboard? In Groningen, there are more than enough places where you can show off your skills. In the city, you can go to Wakepark Groningen at Kardinge. Close to the city is Break Out Grunopark hidden among the greenery and in the Paterswoldsemeer area is WaterSkiClub Paterswoldsemeer. In the province, you can visit Watersportcentre Veendam in Veendam.

The wind in your sails

If you are talking about a sport where you have to master all the elements, that is sailing. The province's wide-open lakes provide an extra challenge in the process. Fun, right? In Groningen, there are several places where you can learn to sail. For instance at the schools near Blauwestad, Meerstad and on the Zuidlaardermeer. Near the city is the Paterswoldsemeer, where you can go to Teuntje de Slak.

With your feet on a board

Prefer to go for a board instead of a boat? Then opt for windsurfing. Unlike general surfing, you don't need waves for this, just wind. And we have more than enough wind in Groningen. In the province, for example, you can windsurf at the Lauwer, in the middle of the National Park Lauwersmeer. At Holiday Park Cnossen near the Leekstermeer you can also master windsurfing. And where you can sail, you can often windsurf too. Plenty of choice.

Stap into a canoe

Grab your paddles and stap into your canoe. There are numerous places in Groningen where you can hire single canoes or two- to three-person kayaks to have a good time. From the Paterswoldsemeer to Winsum and even the mud flats. Enjoy the vastness of the Groningen landscape, a well-stocked picnic basket and peace and quiet along the way.

Relax on a stand-up paddleboard

SUP stands for ‘Stand Up Paddle’. Standing on a SUP board, you paddle through the water. You can make it as relaxing or as intense as you like. This way of getting around on the water is also good for your body: whilst stand-up paddleboarding, you use all your muscle groups. In Groningen, there are plenty of places where you can hire a SUP board. Explore the city from the water or discover the province’s special spots under the full moon.
