S02 city marking/ Book R
S02 city marking/ Book R

Groningen

In 1990 the city of Groningen celebrated its 950 th anniversary and a contemporary city gate was placed at each main entrance road of the city to mark this. Architect Daniel Libeskind developed these city gates. The S02 city marking represents an open book and was created by artist Akira Asada. One page was made from glass and metal, and the other from stone with the text ‘onvoltooid toekomstige tijd’ (simple future tense). The idea was for monitors to project news on the work of art 24/7, but unfortunately technical progress was not ready for this at the time.

Low Profile
Low Profile

Groningen

This land sculpture was designed by architect and artist Gunnar Daan. He was inspired by Emeritus Professor in biological psychiatry Rudy van den Hoofdakker, who is better known as poet Rutger Kopland. In 1966 Van den Hoofdakker published a thesis about sleep disorders, and Daan distilled the theme of sleep from this for his work or art featuring a sleeping woman, man, dog and cat. The figures are embedded in the slope and surrounded by a stainless steel rim. The steel functions as some kind of low profile (hence its title  Low Profile ) filled with earth.

Hoornse Schans rust place

Groningen

The footpath across the dyke by the Paterswoldseweg ends at a ‘look-out’, which provides hikers with a magnificent view of the Piccardthofplas lake. The ‘look-out’ consists of a big weathering steel ring. Nine plane-trees were planted within the ring, which will eventually provide the work of art with a shady green roof. The circle has two entrances with three-metre-high entrance gates. The use of material for the work of art fits in with the Lichtscherm (Light Screen) across the road because both works of art were created by the same artist: Noud de Wolf.

Galgal Hamazalot
Galgal Hamazalot

Groningen

It’s too easy to miss this work by Joseph Semah because it can be seen only when you look at the paving bricks. The artist created eleven bronze moon shapes in the Folkingestraat paving: a lunar cycle from full moon to new moon. When the shapes are joined together, an eye becomes visible with the moon as its pupil. The Hebrew word for moon is eye and is connected to the number eleven because in Hebrew numbers are coupled with words. For Semah the lunar cycle is a metaphor for the life cycle and the cycles of which history and the future are made.
