On 27 June 1909 the Academy Building was newly inaugurated after the building was entirely destroyed by fire in 1906. It was built according to the early seventeenth century North Netherlands Renaissance style the patrons used to refer to the period in which the university was established. Sculptor Petrus Ackermans designed five allegorical sculptures. Minerva is standing in full suit of armour on top of the Academy Building with a helmet on and carrying a spear and coat of arms. Scientia and Historia represent science and history respectively. Prudentia stands for wise policy and Mathematica for mathematics.

Don’t forget to look for seals in the Waddenbeach(3 km)! The campsite is open to caravans, tents and camper vans from 1 April to 1 November and there are facilities for groups and hikers, or hire one of various (timber) caravans with shower and toilet and completely furnished (new) chalets. These houses are also suitable for group accommodation, possibly combined with the recreational space. There is a recreational team in summer. We also work with a quite some local suppliers, like our Bax beers, biodynamic vegetables from ‘Eemstuin’, specialty coffee from Koffiestation and sustainable bread from our local baker Luuk. Some things do not catch the eye until the sun shines, such as in the case of this work by Saar Oosterhof. She applied rhinestones in irregular distances from one another in the Pelsterstraat pavement. The stones only shine when they catch a ray of sun. The built-in holograms provide the stones with depth and their shape changes with every movement. Each stone was handmade by the artist from a cast mixture of resin, colour pigments and glitter. The rhinestones mark the place of a former Groningen town rampart.

The Reiderhaven marina is located in Beerta, near the Blauwestad and at about a kilometre from the Blauwe Sluis that connects to the Winschoterdiep canal. The harbour borders the Oltambtmeer and is surrounded by greenery. The landing stages have water and electricity. In addition to the many facilities on the grounds, the In den Stallen hotel, the Smederij 1872, the Stoomgemaal (steam pumping station) and a swimming place at the Beersterplas are all within a radius of half a kilometre. In short: the Reiderhaven is more than just a harbour.
