Grote Markt
Centre of Groningen
At the foot of the Martinitoren is the Grote Markt. A place of traditional trade. The square has also been home to the historic city hall for two hundred years. Here you stroll past the market stalls. Or take a seat on one of the terraces.
Heart of the city
In the square, you are surrounded by distinctive buildings. At the centre is the city hall. This 1810 building is the heart of Groningen politics. For more than 200 years, decisions on the city's future have been taken here. On the other side of the Grote Markt you will find the region's most iconic building, the Martinitoren. Wars were won and lost on the pavement of this 97-metre-high gem. The tower stood its ground and is still the city's tallest building. Climb up and look out over the whole region.
Packed with conviviality
For as long as anyone can remember, people have been trading in the Grote Markt. Several times a week, you can stroll past the market stalls here. At the edges of the market you can go for a bite to eat and a drink at one of the terraces. Take a seat in front of the monumental façade of the Drie Gezusters, on the large terrace of the Market Hotel or under the smoke of the d'Olle Grieze near the Kostery. There is plenty to discover.
