Maigret in Delfzijl

Picture the year: 1928, the year in which author Georges Simenon bought a boat and sailed through France, Germany Belgium and the Netherlands. During his journey, he used everything he saw underway in his novels and detectives. In 1929, he discovered a gap in his cutter and hurried to the nearest harbour: Delfzijl. The repairs to the ship caused too much noise for him to write, so Simenon had an old barge pumped empty to create a new office. With just one chest to sit on and another for his typewriter, in a mere five days he wrote the novel that heralded the creation of his most famous character, Maigret, in ‘The Strange Case of Peter the Lett’.

Monument Ede Staal

Ede Staal (1941-1986) is without doubt the most famous of Groningen singers. Having lived all over the province, he eventually died in Delfzijl. In 2001, a statue was unveiled on the Delfzijl dyke in honour of him. A stainless steel band coils around the column, on which the lyrics of 'Credo - Mien bestoan', are inscribed (Creed – my existence); one of his best-known songs.

Adam mill

The Adam is a flourmill in Delfzijl at the Molenberg square. Adam was initially located near Bedum, close to the Eva mill. After WWII , the mill fell out of use and was sold to the municipality of Delfzijl in 1954. The lower part of the mill is now an exhibition space.

Theater de Molenberg

The hospitable Theater de Molenberg theatre has developed into the main cultural location in Delfzijl and the region. Staging over one hundred performances a year, artists such as Bert Visscher, Youp van ‘t Hek and Tineke Schouten – not the least of names in the Netherlands – are regulars at this venue. Naturally, there’s also place for less well-known talents and amateur and school performances. They also feature films, and spaces for meetings, courses, congresses and much more. In short: the Molenberg is the place to be for a lovely night out.
