Medieval pearl among the woods

Between the ancient forests of Westerwolde you will find Ter Apel. A village which grew up around a medieval monastery. Today, this history can still be discovered in Ter Apel, but there is more. Take a look in the cosy centre of the village and dive into one of the shops or take a walk through the many nature you can find in the area.

Unique monastery

A monastery was founded in Ter Apel in the year 1464. It is the only surviving rural monastery in north-western Europe. For itinerant travellers, the monastery was a place of hospitality and devotion. The monastery attracted more people towards Ter Apel which eventually created the village. Today, the monastery is no longer in operation as such and you can have a look around. It still hosts the Medieval Ter Apel event every year, taking you back to the time when monks still walked through the corridors here.

The centre in

Right across the village is the Ter Apel canal. Bordering this canal, you will find a cosy centre with a wide variety of shops. A few national chains, but for the most part small, unique shops that provide the street scene with the necessary "Couleur Locale". All kinds of fun activities are organised by the shopkeepers in the centre with some regularity. Ter Apel also has plenty of nice places for a bite to eat and a drink.

Discover nature

Apart from the special monastery and a cosy shopping centre, Ter Apel is above all full of greenery. Around the monastery, for example, you will find the Kloosterbossen (monastery woods) with impressive old oaks and beeches. Through the dal van de Ruiten Aa, just outside the village, there are plenty of lovely routes for walking. Or discover the new routes: the Monks path and the shorter Moekespad. The paths lead you along the Moekesgat, through the woods and the centre of Ter Apel. In cooperation with entrepreneurs, there are fun promotions for those who walk the route, such as a packed lunch for 1 euro or a free second cup of coffee. You can pick up the route maps at the tourist information points in Westerwolde.
