Vesting Oudeschans | the smallest fortress village

Oudeschans – the smallest fortress village ever – developed in 1593 during the Eighty Years’ War. Over two centuries later, in 1814, the fortress was abolished, but the structure of the village remained. Go back in time and follow the marked route across the former defensive walls, by the old Westerwoldse Aa and through the enchanting fortress village. Stelmakerij Sellingen | The ancient countryside

Sellingen – Village farmers used to go to the Stelmakerij in the mediaeval village of Sellingen for their carriage frames and wooden tools to be produced. One of the oldest buildings in the village to be retained, it now houses an exhibition space. In Terra Mora, learn about the relationship between the marsh and the fortress, go to the De Baracquen museum to see implements and appliances from long ago, or take a peek in the former captain’s cottage.
