At the Punt van Reide, traces of the past are also still visible. Because of its strategic location, the point played an important role in the Eighty Years' War and the Second World War, among others. During the latter war, the Germans built their defences here on barracks in the water to defend the port of Emden. In 1943, they sought a drier refuge and built Batterij Fiemel. This became part of the Atlantic Wall, the defence line along the entire west coast of Europe. Most of the bunkers have since been demolished, but at the Punt van Reide two can still be viewed. One is currently set up as an overnight roost for bats. In the other, you can learn more about one of the last liberated parts of the Netherlands. The exhibition is freely accessible.
