Following is a selection from the ‘24 uur wind mee in Eemsdelta’ brochure, which is available at the Tourist Information Office. Before you set out, we recommend that you check the opening hours of venues and locations to avoid disappointment.

Set out

Delfzijl: Sunrise Beach
Start the day with a visit to the beach in Delfzijl. Did you know that this is the only beach in the Netherlands where you can see the sunrise from the sand? Let the direction of the wind guide you to your next destination: north or west.

North
Head north via the picturesque village of Uitwierde and take in the bunkers of the hamlet of Nansum. Continue to the double dyke of Bierum at the shore, and have a drink at the teagarden of the Luingahof and stock up on some fresh regional products here.

West
Follow the Damsterdiep canal to visit the town of Appingedam and its hanging kitchens. Let the wind take you to the Muzeheerd museum where artist Rob Mohlmann works.

If the wind comes from the south, head towards Westeremden, hometown to famous Realism artist Henk Helmantel.

Time for lunch

Enjoy lunch in style at the Landgoed Ekenstein country estate in Appingedam. You could also opt for Brasserie MEER in Loppersum and treat yourself to a stunning view of one of the most beautiful churches in the Netherlands. For a sense of the countryside, head for the Borg Ewsum tearoom for refreshments in a beautiful setting surrounded by fruit trees and young crops.

After refuelling your inner self with a delicious lunch, hop back on your bike and get those wheels turning again!

The Eemsdelta has wonderful options for so many activities. Let’s provide you with some tips for a suitable afternoon programme. Get on board the Damsterveer for a cruise of Appingedam, or hire a canoe or SUP board.

Alternatively, explore Delfzijl or Appingedam on foot to take in their surprising and interesting places and stories. Go to a Tourist information point to obtain the ‘Appingedam & Delfzijl: twee verhalen ineen’ brochure to walk the various routes.

Let the wind blow you in a south-eastern direction towards De Punt van Reide near Termunterzijl to spot seals and birds. Tip: sample some delicious fresh fish in the charming former fishing village of Termunterzijl.

More fun activities
