Stadskanaal
Stadskanaal was once a mooring place for captains sailing the canal. During their journeys, this was where they’d go ashore to visit the shops and cafés. Although shipping has decreased over time, the shops have remained. Today, famous store chains and local entrepreneurs showcase wonderful selections.
Ter Apel
Ter Apel – a village that developed around a mediaeval monastery – is located in the ancient Westerwolde woodlands. Its history is still clearly recognisable, but there is way more to the village itself. The canal cuts through the centre and is fringed with a variety of shops, most of which are small-scale, special shops that provide more than a hint of ‘Couleur Locale’.

Surpassed only by the city of Groningen’s shopping areas, Winschoten developed as the second-largest shopping town in the province. The blend of store chains and many local entrepreneurs makes for a nice varied selection. After taking in all those surprising shop-windows, time has come for a well-deserved break. Head for the Marktplein where you’ll find various charming outdoor cafés.
Smeerling
The charming hamlet of Smeerling – a protected rural area – is located in the Ruiten Aa stream valley. Consisting of only eight renovated farms, this is also where you’ll find Smeerling Antiek. They sell lovely items, both new and authentic, and second-hand. Afterwards, enjoy a delicious lunch at Gasterij Natuurlijk Smeerling just down the road.
