SPAfrica Reading Session: The Elephant in the Room - Studio Julian Hetzel / University of Groningen / Grand Theatre

On February 13, Studio Julian Hetzel, University of Groningen and Grand Theatre invite you to the reading session The Elephant in the Room. During this evening, we delve deeper into some of the new performance SPAfrica of Studio Julian Hetzel addresses. In SPAfrica, Julian Hetzel & Ntando Cele join forces to explore the limits of empathy. What if empathy doesn’t change power structures but reinforces existing privileges? SPAfrica reveals the problematic mechanisms and hidden racism of its working. Is trauma the new gold of the arts?

About the hosts Ntando Cele was born in South Africa and is based in Bern, Switserland. She studied acting in Durban and also attended DasArts in Amsterdam. Her work overturns the borders between Physical Theatre, video installation, concert and performance. She combines music, text and video to recreate her own identity on the stage.

Tjesse Riemersma is a writer, philosopher, journalist, and musician. He serves as a philosophy reviewer for the newspaper Trouw and contributes to various magazines and newspapers. Additionally, he works as a lecturer in Public-oriented Writing at the Philosophy department of the University of Groningen.
