Churches; Oases of rest
Elevated above the surrounding land, the churches are unmissable. Eems Delta has a good number of wierde churches from the late Middle Ages. Magical places they are, havens of contemplation. Oases of peace. The best part is that you can usually walk right into them.
Ca. 38 km.
During this cycle route, you will meet numerous beautiful churches in Eems Delta. Often the door is already open or you can borrow a key from the neighbour.
Leermens, Zeerijp, Loppersum, Eenum: whoever turns 360˚ degrees around on the road between the fields sees the church towers of four villages. And there in the north, isn't that the spire of 't Zandt? Stap on your bike and you'll come across many more. Like the rest of North Groningen and North Friesland, Eemsdelta is brimming with late medieval churches. Nowhere else in Europe are there so many churches from the 11th, 12th and 13th centuries as along the Wadden coast. Everywhere a new spire peeks up between the trees. Nor are they easy to miss, as they are literally raised above the surrounding land.

ODS OF BEZINNING
Groninger Kerken manages and restores more than 100 churches in the province, a treasure trove of religious heritage. Heritage that may be seen and experienced. Usually, a sign at the church door indicates whether the church is open. Or it is indicated at the door to which of the neighbours the key can be collected.
