Zeehondenkijkwand | Termunten
Seals regularly swim via the Eems to the Dollard. The mothers give birth to their pups on the sandbanks close to the coast. That is why the Dollard is nicknamed ‘the maternity ward of the Wadden Sea’. From spring to autumn, a zeehondenkijkwand is set up at the Punt van Reide, allowing you to get a good look at the mothers and their pups without disturbing them.

Discover the remarkable sluices of Aduarderzijl. The sluice dating from 1400, which was originally made of wood, was used to drain water from around the city of Groningen. During the St Martin’s Flood of 1686, this sluice was completely swept away. Nowadays, there are two locks: a western sluice (built in 1706) and an eastern one (built in 1867). If you’re arriving by bike or on foot, you can take the Reitdiepveer from here to the other side of the Reitdiep.

The water ripples across the mudflats, whilst birds peck for their food. You can enjoy a magnificent view of this dynamic natural landscape from vogelkijkhut De Kiekkaaste near Nieuwe Statenzijl. This is the only birdwatching hut in the Netherlands located outside the dykes. Walk through the reeds along the boardwalk to the hide and feast your eyes on the view. You won’t find nature like this anywhere else.
